Open Sandbox Cybertherapy Platform

The Open Sandbox Cybertherapy Platform is both a system and platform for remote development of Cybertherapy (games for healthcare) applications using project management software and 3D Virtual Worlds environments.

 

The concept has evolved from research explored in my article, Open Sandbox: New Modalities of Animation Delivery, published in Design Principles and Practices, An International Journal, Volume 5, Number 4 in 2011 by Common Ground Pub.

 

The research explores expanding usage of online open source Virtual Worlds platforms and social networked project development systems for 3D animation production in the entertainmenment and games industries and art media installation work.

 

The article generated immediate interest from media and medical sectors and as a result, I was encouraged to explore the application of my research to the emerging area of cybertherapy games development and was subsequently invited to present my research to date at the Universite Laval, in Canada. The system provides a platform for the visualization of for remote development of Cybertherapy (games for healthcare) applications by modelling them in a 3D virtual worlds environment and managing the project through project management software.

 

The benefits of the system are two-fold.

 

Firstly, by utilising a Virtual Worlds environment (through the use of open source client software, the client may be remotely present) during the build facilitating immediate feedback and approval. As well, clients may test the medical viability of the cybertherapy environment using current quantitative data collection methods while the project is in development.

 

Secondly, the usage of a wiki-like structured project management software, facilitates a text and image based system to support and compliment the 3D project development. Incidentally, the use of project management software, has been embraced almost universally by small animation and media companies for remote international project development.

Problem Being Solved

Open Sandbox is an innovative system for the remote delivery and production of games-based Cybertherapy solutions for heathcare service agencies using open source software and offering uniquely integrated web-based strategies for healthcare client input and approval.

Technology

The Open Sandbox Cybertherapy Project aims to:

 

·         Create a methodology for the development of a games-based sandbox platform for the development of a 3D CGI Cybertherapy solution.

 

·         Create a system for the classification of aesthetic variables in virtual environments specifically for the development of Cybertherapy solutions for Healthcare Providers.

 

·         Create a system for client-centred project monitoring, approval and testing of Cybertherapy solutions for heathcare provision.

 

Create a working prototype of the system.

·         To provide Heathcare Clients with remotely accessible cybertherapy treatments.

 

·         To provide Heathcare Clients with discrete cybertherapy treatments.

 

·         To provide Heathcare funding bodies with a low cost treatment alternatives.

 

·         To provide Heathcare funding bodies with a high volume alternatives for reducing treatment waiting lists.

 

·         To provide games developers in Northern Ireland with an alternative client source to that of the highly volatile and unpredictable games entertainment industry.
